Pay Up Or Else!

This is a little odd:

A German bishops’ decree which has just come into force says anyone failing to pay the tax – an extra 8% of their income tax bill – will no longer be considered a Catholic.

The bishops have been alarmed by the number of Catholics leaving the Church.

So, threatening to slam the door on their faces is the way to keep them coming? What century is this again?

I hope this nonsense doesn’t spread to Austria, particularly after reading this part:

Unless they pay the religious tax, Catholics will no longer be allowed receive sacraments, except before death, or work in the church and its schools or hospitals.

Hmmm, what about non-Catholics, then? I do some work for the Catholic Church. I am paid for my services. However, no one has ever, ever asked me to show my RC cred (which lapsed ages ago, in fact I officially left only when they starting hitting up for the tax money.) Surely there are non-catholic doctors, nurses, administrators, cleaning staff, etc at these institutions. Will a former defaulting member of the fold be kicked out, while the heathens can stay on?

I guess they’re copying the Mormon tithing model of 10% of your income goes to the church. But I think this will really make people leave the church for good. Especially after the pedophilia scandal…

Well the church tax has been around for ages, they used to rely on civil shame at being publicly discovered — the same honor system that makes most people buy subway tickets — but what their game is now is beyond me. Plenty of people have left and are still leaving, some come back. My guess is that the legal threats that accompany non-payment are completely toothless and too many people have figured that out.
