Viva La Revolution

My theater likes to have themes running through the season, sometimes clear ones (Turandot and Land des Lächelns) and sometimes not immediately clear (Salome and Jesus Christ Superstar.) I find it interesting to find the threads that tie different pieces together. This year we’ve been concentrating on the French Revolution, with Dialogues des Carmelites, Les Misérables, and a production earlier in the year of Andrea Chenier. Are there any we missed? Anyway, these days I see one side of it in morning rehearsals, and then another in the evening’s performance. Frankly, all that uprising and martyrdom has made for a hard week — I need a cease-fire on Sunday to recover.
