A peony, or “Pfingst-rose” (Pentacost rose) on the terrace. In three years it has never blossomed, but this month its leaves have turned a red reminiscent of the fall colours of southeastern Pennsylvania. You don’t see much startling fall foliage in the Alps; the trees and the climate are wrong for it.
